Popular Crane Models in Nigeria
These are the cranes we quote most often for Nigeria. Nigerian orders skew towards machines that can be moved between sites on a lowbed and kept running with locally available parts, which is why the mid-size classes dominate what we quote.
Crane XCMG QAY200 All-Terrain Crane
A 200-ton all-terrain crane with a 61 m six-section main boom, 96 m maximum system height and six-axle hydro-pneumatic carrier — built for power, petrochemical and heavy lifting projects.

How Cranes Clear Customs in Nigeria
Nigeria combines a pre-shipment conformity assessment with inspection at the port of discharge. For regulated products the SONCAP Product Certificate (PC) is obtained at origin — in practice in China, before the goods are loaded — and is then used to obtain the SONCAP Certificate (SC) that customs asks for on arrival. Alongside it, the importer opens a Form M and obtains a Pre-Arrival Assessment Report before the vessel arrives.
What the importer has to do
- 1 Form M. Opened by the importer through an authorised dealer bank against the proforma invoice. This is the entry point for the whole import file.
- 2 Foreign exchange allocation. FX is sought against the Form M. Availability and timing here are the most common reason a Nigerian order slips, more often than any customs step.
- 3 SONCAP Product Certificate (PC). Obtained at origin before shipment through an appointed conformity assessment body. Intertek, Cotecna, SGS and Bureau Veritas appear on the appointed lists used for China-origin shipments.
- 4 Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR). Issued before the vessel arrives and used as the basis of the customs assessment.
- 5 Clean Report of Findings / destination inspection. Inspection at the port of discharge, followed by duty assessment and release.
Documents customs will ask for
- Commercial invoice
- Prepared by us, matching the proforma used for the Form M.
- Packing list
- Prepared by us, with dimensions and weights for the shipping method used.
- Bill of lading
- Issued by the carrier; released according to the payment terms agreed.
- Form M
- Importer-side, opened through an authorised dealer bank.
- PAAR
- Importer-side, obtained before arrival.
- SONCAP PC and SC
- Product Certificate obtained at origin, SONCAP Certificate issued against it.
- Clean Report of Findings (CRF)
- Outcome of the destination inspection.
Ports and transit
- Apapa (Lagos)
- The main gateway and the most congestion-sensitive of the Lagos berths.
- Tin Can Island (Lagos)
- The usual alternative when Apapa is backed up.
- Onne (Rivers State)
- Preferred for oil and gas work and for projects in the eastern region.
- Port Harcourt
- Used for Niger Delta and eastern corridor projects.
- Lekki Deep Sea Port
- Newer deep-water capacity east of Lagos; worth checking for large RORO calls.
Indicative transit from Shanghai, Lianyungang or Qingdao to Lagos is commonly quoted in a 25–35 day band. Sailing schedule and Lagos berth congestion move this in both directions, so we quote the current schedule with your proforma invoice rather than treating any single number as fixed.
What is driving equipment demand in Nigeria
- The Lagos–Calabar coastal highway and the Sokoto–Badagry corridor, both long-horizon earthworks programmes
- Rail rehabilitation and federal and state road resurfacing
- Solid-minerals work in Zamfara, Nasarawa and on the Jos plateau
- Oil and gas support work around Port Harcourt and Warri
- Estate land preparation and housing around Lagos and Abuja
Check before you commit
Two points where public sources disagree and where we will not guess: (1) duty treatment — some sources describe ECOWAS common external tariff treatment for capital equipment while others cite a duty-plus-levy band in the region of 5–10% with VAT on top; (2) age limits — a 12–15 year practical guide is widely repeated in the trade but is not a single published rule. Confirm both with your licensed clearing agent before you commit, and treat any duty figure as indicative only.
Sources and review date
- Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SONCAP programme)
- Nigeria Customs Service (PAAR and destination inspection)
- Central Bank of Nigeria (Form M and FX allocation)
- Appointed conformity assessment bodies (Intertek, Cotecna, SGS, Bureau Veritas)
Reviewed 2026-10-18. This section describes the regulatory framework that applies to imports into Nigeria. It is not a statement that any particular machine is approved, certified or exempt, and it is not a customs ruling. Import rules change frequently — confirm the current requirements with a licensed clearing agent or customs broker before you ship.
Cost Guide
Crane Prices for Nigeria Buyers
| Model | Class | FOB Price (China) |
|---|---|---|
| XCMG QAY200 | 200 t all-terrain crane | Request current quote |
| SANY STC2400C8-8 | 240 t truck crane | Request current quote |
Crane prices vary with boom configuration, counterweight and exchange rates. Request a quotation for a current price including freight to your chosen Nigerian port.
What Makes Up the Landed Cost in Nigeria
- FOB machine price, which moves with configuration, attachments and boom options
- Ocean freight to your chosen Lagos or Onne berth
- Marine insurance
- Import duty, levies and VAT assessed at the destination port
- Clearing and agency fees
- The cost of delay — foreign-exchange allocation and berth congestion are what actually blow a Nigerian budget, not the freight line
Ask us for a quotation that shows each component clearly, so you can compare offers on the same basis.
Shipping Truck and All-Terrain Cranes to Lagos and Onne
Truck cranes and all-terrain cranes are self-propelled, so they normally travel by RORO (roll-on/roll-off) — driven onto the vessel and lashed down. Larger all-terrain models frequently need:
- Partial disassembly of jibs, extensions or counterweight sections
- Flat-rack or breakbulk arrangements instead of RORO
- Load-securing engineering approved by the carrier before loading
Most crane shipments to Nigeria land at Lagos (Apapa or Tin Can Island) or Onne. Onne is usually the better call for refinery, petro-plant and eastern-corridor work. We clean and document the machine before loading and send the load plan for your sign-off.
Matching Crane Capacity to Nigerian Lift Plans
Two classes cover most Nigerian enquiries:
- XCMG QAY200 all-terrain crane — a 200-ton class machine with multiple counterweight configurations and the mobility to move between sites under its own power.
- SANY STC2400C8-8 truck crane — a 240-ton class crane with a long main boom for refinery, power-plant and bridge work.
What decides the machine is your lift plan — maximum load, lifting height and working radius — not the headline tonnage. Send us those three numbers and we will tell you whether 200 or 240 tons is the honest answer. The truck crane selection guide explains the radius trade-off.
What Nigerian Crane Buyers Ask Us First
- How is counterweight handled? Ask us to price it as an explicit line. It is often shipped with the crane rather than moved over the road, and axle-load limits on Nigerian roads are the reason — worth knowing before you plan the move from the port.
- Who handles the SONCAP side? The Product Certificate is obtained in China before loading. We coordinate the inspection with your appointed conformity body so it does not hold the vessel.
- Should I ship to Onne instead of Lagos? For refinery, petro-plant and eastern work, usually yes. The saving is in the inland leg and in avoiding the Lagos berth queue.
Where These Cranes End Up in Nigeria
Cranes from this range are working on refinery and petro-plant construction, power transmission and substation work, bridge girder erection, telecom tower installation, and plant maintenance turnarounds — mainly around Lagos and the Niger Delta.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you ship a truck crane from China to Nigeria?
Truck cranes ship by RORO or by flat-rack depending on the model, boom configuration and carrier. Some configurations require partial disassembly of jibs or counterweight. We confirm the exact shipping plan and freight estimate with your quotation.
How long does shipping from China to Lagos take?
Transit time from major Chinese ports to Lagos typically ranges from 25 to 35 days depending on the sailing schedule and port conditions. Crane shipments may need extra port handling time depending on the configuration.
What documents do I need to import a crane into Nigeria?
Your side carries the Form M, the foreign-exchange allocation and the Pre-Arrival Assessment Report. The SONCAP Product Certificate is obtained in China before loading through an appointed conformity assessment body, and the SONCAP Certificate follows from it. We prepare the bill of lading, commercial invoice and packing list, and we coordinate the origin-side inspection so it does not hold the vessel. Duty treatment and age guidance are both worth confirming with your licensed clearing agent, because public sources differ on each.
Which crane capacity is most popular in Nigeria?
Demand in Nigeria spans from 25-ton class machines for general construction to 200-ton-plus cranes for refinery, power and infrastructure lifts. The 200–240 t class covers major project work. Tell us your maximum load, lift height and radius, and we will recommend a configuration.
Do you provide after-sales support for cranes delivered to Nigeria?
Yes. We coordinate spare parts shipments and provide technical documentation and remote assistance. On crane orders we recommend pricing a starter kit with the machine, because clearance through Lagos is what determines how fast a part reaches site.
